SLASH is the story of Billy Mann, plain and simple. Is Evil (with a a capital E) born or made? Billy started life as a normal child: his parents hated each other. HIs mother killed his father. He killed poor animals. Raped his sister. Normal by any insane definition. Read as Billy tells the police everything he's ever done in his life. Every murder. Every death. Every drop of blood. His only plans involve feeding his need for brutality and since his only job is killing he tends to have a one track mind. Billy tries to distract himself with love and school, but his basic need to kill always leads him back to his murderous ways. It is tough to like him at times because he is so single minded. However, his slow mental disintegration throughout the book is an interesting ride. I found myself more and more intrigued about why he did what he did as he laid out each of his kills. Although, the vivid descriptions of the executions of each his victims are told in such gory and vivid detail at times I found hard to read. In the end, Billy's ambiguous thoughts and impulsive behavior reveal a crack in his psyche and made me wonder if there is something else driving his sadistic behavior." |
